You can be as active or as laid back as you like during your North Carolina vacation in Cashiers and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. From the Inn you can walk to many antique shops, art galleries, furniture stores and gift shops. Along the way you will pass many fine restaurants, some of which even offer live evening entertainment. You can take a scenic drive or hike to one of the numerous breathtaking waterfalls. Play golf, go whitewater rafting, take a swing at tennis, or go for a horseback ride. And in the winter, ski and tube at the nearby slopes. The following are open to the public: Sapphire Mountain Golf Club offers scenic views and stone bridge crossings over mountain streams on the 6,185-yard, par 70 course. Horse Back Riding Enjoy a day of riding on our local trails. Whitewater rafting is provided by many companys and is a wonderful activity in the summer. Shopping: Cashiers is known for it's many antique and gift shops. Come enjoy the new walking path that loops around town and allows you to walk to most of the shops and restaurants right from the Laurelwood Mountain Inn. Waterfalls and Hiking
There are 19 waterfalls in the Cashiers area, including the king of them all, Whitewater Falls, the tallest in eastern America. Be sure to ask us at check-in for a map to the waterfalls. North Carolina Waterfalls is a helpful website with a lot of information regarding the waterfalls in Jackson County and surrounding areas.
The Cashiers area is know for its many beautiful hiking trails. Pack a lunch and enjoy the many trails in our area. When you check in, ask for a hiking map. The Zachary-Tolbert House -an 1840 estate house on the National Register of Historic Places is located just 1 mile south of Cashiers. The house was built by one fo the founders of Cashiers. The Highlands Nature Center and Biological Station has a host of exhibits on the mountain eco-system and biodiversity, including live animals, hands-on-stations, plus an archeological exhibits. Their grounds are a great place for a picnic! The Brevard Music Center offers wonderful concerts and plays during the summer months. Gorges State Park is a beautiful new area that has just been open to the public. The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is a fun place for the whole family. There are also some pretty waterfalls nearby. If you decide to go the the Pisgah Center, then continune on to the Cradle of Forestry . Another fun family activity. On the campus of Western Carolina University is the Mountain Heritage Center which offers a glimpse into mountain life with an indoor log cabin, working loom and displays featuring everything from old tools to the history of the Scots-Irish, who were som of the region's first settlers. The Oconalufree Living History Village in Cherokee has re-enactments of early Cherokee life. The outdoor drama Unto These Hills is offerered all summer. ATV Adventures offers pick up in Cashiers. These trips are for age 16 and over.
